An IMPD squad car issued to one of IMPD's sworn police officers was found ditched in the 5100 block of S. Emerson early Sunday morning at 12:30 a.m. according to the Indianapolis Star. The vehicle was left abandoned unlocked and without the keys inside it when police officers discovered the vehicle and towed to a municipal garage. According to The Star, the name of the officer to whom the car was issued has been redacted from the police report. Why? A spokesman for the department, Sgt. Kendale Adams, would only say that an internal investigation was under review and no further information would be released. So much for IMPD Chief Troy Riggs' claims about the department operating with transparency.
UPDATE: Sources tell Advance Indiana the squad car found ditched was issued to Det. Nick Mitchell, a 21-year veteran of the department. How his car wound up abandoned in the ditch is unclear. IMPD is still not confirming the identity of the officer or any other details beyond the fact the car was found abandoned in a ditch on S. Emerson.
